Melbourne: Netherlands earned a
place in semi final as they seized a 2-0 win against New Zealand
securing a spot in Saturday’s semi-final against unpredictable Pakistan.
With this crucial victory, the Dutch
will go for their third-consecutive medal at the Champions Trophy. They
also finish in the top-four for the record 25th consecutive time at the annual event.
The Dutch were the clear favourites
before the commencement of the match as they have lost only once in the
previous Champions Trophy meetings against New Zealand.
Netherland’s Jeroen Hertzberger gave the
Dutch the 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the action when he flicked the ball
easily into the nets. At the end of the first half, Holland was leading
1-0 against the black sticks.
The second half started with the same as
the first until Billy Bakker scored a critical and final goal of the
match, enduring the 2-0 goal lead till the end of the match.
The Dutch have won bronze at the previous two editions of the Champions Trophy and have earned 21 total medals at the event.
Netherland has not played in the finals at the Champions Trophy since 2006 while green shirts played the final in 1998.
The Semi Final between Netherland and Pakistan will be played on Saturday.
