“Yesterday we actually played good hockey but we missed our chances. Today we missed some chances but we managed to score as well, so this is very good experience for our young players,” Shakeel Abbasi said.

The Hockey Champions Trophy is an event held annually by the International Hockey Federation (since 1978). Founded by Pakistan's Air Marshal Nur Khan, it features the world's top-ranked teams competing in a round robin format. The Pakistan Hockey Federation started the competition as a men's tournament in 1978. The tournament has been an annual affair since 1980 for men and since 1987 for women.

In the men's tournament, the Australians have won the trophy twelve, the Germans nine, and the Dutch eight times. Pakistan is the only Asian champion, with three titles to its name including the first two in 1978 and 1980. In the women's tournament both the Netherlands and Australia have won the trophy six times, while Argentina won five titles.

Six teams qualify for the championship, though the first edition had five teams, the second had seven and 1987 had eight. In the year following the Olympics or a World Cup, the six teams include the host, the defending champion, the world champion and the next highest ranked teams from either the most recent World Cup or Olympic Games.

The last placed team in the tournament is dropped and replaced by the winner of the Champions Challenge, which was introduced in 2001 and can be considered as the Champions Trophy for so called B-nations.

Melbourne to host 2012 Champions Trophy

MELBOURNE: Australia will defend their men's Champions Trophy field hockey crown on home soil this year with Melbourne Tuesday named as host city.

The Kookaburras will be chasing an unprecedented fifth straight title at the December 1-9 event which features the top five teams from last year's Champions Trophy, the winner of the Champions Challenge and two invitees.

"Being the first international event following the London Olympics is a fantastic opportunity for all sports lovers to come out to watch the best of the best in our sport," said Hockey Australia chief executive Mark Anderson.

"Regardless of the results in London, we are guaranteed to have the gold medal champions here on show in Melbourne, just three months after the world's biggest sporting event is conducted."

Last year, the Kookaburras defeated Spain in a thrilling final 1-0 in Auckland with Eddie Ockenden sealing the win. (AFP)

FIH Release Champions Trophy Tournament Fixture

The Federation of International Hockey today announced the match schedule for the Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy 2012 to be played in Melbourne, Australia from December 1-9.
Home town favourites Australia will kick off their Hockey Champions Trophy defense by taking on 2011 Champions Challenge winners Belgium in the opening Pool B round match on 1st December at Melbourne’s State Netball Hockey Centre.
"Victoria is the home of major sporting events in Australia and visitors to the Champions Trophy will have a tremendous opportunity to experience our excellent restaurants, shopping and night-life as well as visiting some of our world renowned natural attractions". Victorian Minister for Sport and Recreation, the Hon Hugh Delahunty, MP said today.
“This will be the first time that the teams will compete against each other since the London Olympics. With the gold, silver and bronze medal teams in action in Melbourne, the quality of competition is going to be extremely high. We are pleased to be hosting all eight teams and are pleased that our traditional sporting rival, England has recently been confirmed as a participant in this year’s Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy,” said Hockey Australia Chief Executive, Mark Anderson.
The Kookaburras are looking to create history on home soil by winning a record five straight Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy’s. Along with Belgium, Australia will be joined by the Netherlands and Pakistan in Pool B.
Split into two preliminary round groups of four, Group A will feature London gold medalists Germany, England, New Zealand and India.
"The Victorian Government is proud to be supporting the prestigious Champions Trophy tournament in Melbourne in December and we are very much looking forward to seeing the Australian Kookaburras as they take on teams from New Zealand, Pakistan, India, England, Belgium, Netherlands and the current number one ranked Germany." said Minister Delahunty.
This year’s tournament will be the first time that the cross-over quarterfinal format is used at a Men’s Champions Trophy.
“We have an extremely competitive collection of teams and an exciting quarterfinal format. When you add to the mix that we will be in a great hockey country watching the top men’s team from the last cycle looking to defend its title, we are in for a great nine days.” said FIH President Leandro Negre.
The top five finishers from the 2011 Men’s Champions Trophy earned automatic places in this year’s event. Unfortunately, Spain ceded its place for the Melbourne event due to financial constraints in the hard hit European nation. England was therefore invited to take the place of Spain as the next highest-ranked team not automatically qualified.
The final three places were reserved for the winner of the 2011 Champions Challenge 1, Belgium, and two invitation places assigned by the FIH Executive Board. Following meetings during the London Olympic Games those two spots were awarded to Pakistan and India.
The preliminary round group play will take place from December 1-4 over three competition days. Germany and New Zealand kick off the action on 1st December.
Following the round matches, teams will move into a cross over quarterfinal with the top finishing teams meeting the lowest teams in the opposite pool and the second and third place finishers also face off in the knock out quarterfinal. From there the winners move onto semi-finals and medal games, while the losers will play for placement.
With the introduction of the FIH World League, Melbourne will mark the last annual edition of the tournament, converting to a biennial event from 2014.

Netherlands change it up for Men's Champions Trophy 2012

A number of returns to the international fold including Rotterdam captain Jeroen Hertzberger headline European powerhouse the Netherlands squad to travel to Australia for the December 1-9 Men’s Hockey Champions Trophy 2012 at Melbourne’s State Netball Hockey Centre.
Joining Hertzberger on his return to the international ranks is Quirijn Caspers, Floris van der Linden and Seve Van Ass, who were arguably the biggest names left out of the Netherlands team that claimed silver at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Dutch coach Paul Van Ass was forced to make a number of changes to his squad, with regulars Teun de Nooijer, Floris Evers and Roderick Weusthof not in the group to travel to Melbourne after announcing their retirement post the London Games.
Van Ass will also be without the services of midfielder Robert Van der Horst, who will remain in the Netherlands to be with his wife, who is expecting their second child.
“In 2010 my first daughter was born two days before the Champions Trophy in Mönchengladbach and I played, but Australia is too far away. The birth of a child is special and I want to be present. In consultation with Paul (Van Ass) I decided I will stay at home,” said Van der Horst.
The changes will give a host of young and returning players the opportunity to impress head coach Van Ass at international level.

The Netherlands will line-up in Pool B against host nation Australia, Belgium and Pakistan.
Pool A includes London Olympic Games gold medal winner Germany, England, New Zealand and India.
Full Netherlands squad: Seve Van Ass (HGC), Sander Baart (Oranje-Zwart), Billy Bakker (Amsterdam), Marcel Balkestein (Oranje-Zwart), Pirmin Blaak (H.C. Rotterdam), Quirijn Caspers (Kampong), Jeroen Hertzberge (H.C. Rotterdam), Rogier Hofman (Bloemendaal), Tim Jenniskens (Bloemendaal), Wouter Jolie (Bloemendaal), Robbert Kemperman
(Kampong), Floris van der Linden (HGC), Jaap Stockmann (Bloemendaal), Valentin Verga (Amsterdam), Klaas Vermeulen (Amsterdam), Bob de Voogd (Oranje-Zwart), Mink van der Weerden (Oranje-Zwart), Sander de Wij (Kampong)

Kookaburras name 18 man Champions Trophy squad

As the road to Rio 2016 starts, five-time international player of the year Jamie Dwyer will headline an Australian team featuring 10 London Olympic bronze medalists at the Men’s Champions Trophy 2012 in Melbourne from 1-9 December.
The Champions Trophy is the first major men’s hockey tournament since the London Games and will provide the perfect opportunity for new, returning and regular players to showcase their credentials to claim a spot on the 2013 Kookaburras roster.
“The first Champions Trophy in the new Olympic cycle will allow teams to try different things. It’s important to have some younger players there and bring back athletes we might want to have another look at in different positions,” said Kookaburras assistant coach Graham Reid.
Australia will face the world’s leading hockey nations including reigning Olympic champions Germany and silver medalists the Netherlands as they attempt to reclaim the number one world ranking.

“The tournament allows our athletes chasing certain positions to line up against some of the world’s best players and challenge themselves. It will be refreshing,” said Reid.
Kookaburras youngsters Trent Mitton, Josh Miller and Tristan White will have their chance to impress the Kookaburras coaching staff and selectors, replacing London Olympians Liam de Young, Tim Deavin, Matt Gohdes and Matthew Butturini.
European based players Simon Orchard, Fergus Kavanagh, Chris Ciriello and Mark Knowles have all been included in the 18 man squad.
Highly decorated Olympian Nathan Burgers announced his retirement from international hockey earlier this month, opening the door for George Bazeley and Andrew Charter to make their claim as Australia’s first choice goal keeper.
“I leave the international stage as a World Cup, Commonwealth Games and Champions Trophy winner, as well as an Olympic bronze medalist. With my departure, Bazeley and Charter will no doubt be eyeing that starting spot,” said Burgers.
History will not be lost on the Kookaburras squad. In recent year’s the Australian’s have dominated the Champions Trophy and will be attempting to win a record fifth successive title.
With four major international tournaments between now and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games the Champions Trophy will set the foundation for the next four years and the Kookaburras ambitions of gold in Rio.
